About the StreetKIDS! Program

1. StreetKIDS! PROGRAM

StreetKIDS! PROGRAM is a 24/7 rehabilitation shelter for children between the ages of 6 to 16 who come from vulnerable and substance abuse backgrounds.

Children who loiter the streets and have either come from abused backgrounds, or gotten themselves involved in glue sniffing, theft and street gangs. Over time, these children at risk become outcast from their own society, facing rejection from family, school and neighbors.

Children-at-risk are in 2 categories:

The first category are children who are addicted to drugs or those come abused backgrounds.

The second category are vulnerable children from dysfunctional families or families with a history of vice.

The Selection criteria :

1 ) Each child is interviewed personally by the program manager
2 ) Program manager conducts an independent needs assessment at the child’s home together with the parents
3 ) If the child falls under the above 2 categories, consent will be sought from their parents or guardians to allow the child to join the program.

The Probation Process:

1 ) Upon acceptance, the Category 1 children are required to stay within the STK shelter premises for 3 months under a guardian to de-associate the child from drug-gangs and peer pressure.
2 ) Children in Category 2 are required to stay within the STK shelter for 2 months to ascertain if the child is suitable living in the community environment.

Sponsorship Process :

1 ) A call for sponsors will start between the 1st to 3rd month, depending on the child’s progress. Gaining a sponsorship, the child will be entitled to the rehabilitation program and an opportunity for education.

Note : If the child does not receive a sponsorship by the 4th month of staying  in the shelter, the child will have to be released from the program back to the child’s family.

The Rehabilitation Process:

The rehabilitation program is a simple but effective one, allowing the  child to acquire new skills, learn about responsibilities and become disciplined in an environment of love and acceptance. RADION also imparts values by letting these children know that they have hope and a choice of turning a new leaf. However, the only person who can free themselves from their life of abuse and vice is themselves.

In addition, StreetKIDS! are encouraged to join RADION’s staff to visit and help other needy families within the village, thus imparting important values of helping others.

Mass Outings :

Mass excursions are organized every quarter of the year where we take 60-100 village children from vulnerable families out of the village for educational exposure. Each excursion allows the team to build rapport with the children as well as provide a platform to identifying at-risk children and bring them onto our STREETKIDS! program.

Sponsorship Scheme:

Sponsoring a child enables the child to receive care and also a safe environment to grow. Each sponsorship provides all that a child needs at each particular stage of his/her life. This covers school fees, uniforms, transportation, medical care, allowance and most importantly a safe shelter.
